Free Directory Found
Heh, I think I forgot that Larson put up this Gossamer Threads directory a couple of years ago. I just came across it while I was going through the httpd.conf on his server (he he), to try and fix a redirect that was missing. Low and behold, it was there and fully functional. Now, I guess it just needs some links put in there and pointed to it. So, if you got something you want to submit, have a day.
Diet Info
Since I have just returned from 5 days and nights of eating and drinking until I could not consume any more, I figured it is time to shed some pounds before I head down to Mexico with the family for New Year’s Eve. I did a little write up on a diet that I have used over the past 10 years to lose weight when I want to or to keep things under control when I am not exercising. So, if you are looking for an easy to follow system to manage your weight then you will want to check out my totally unscientific diet plan.
Plus, you can check out the 1 for Fitness blog and website while you are over there.
Wine Clubs of America Updated
Just updated the Wine Clubs of America website. The new site (old layout) is using WordPress as a CMS and blogging platform. I modified the old template and created a WordPress theme with it, although I am still having some issues with the navigation links on the left hand side. I may have to change how the links are displayed using the template tag config for each. But, that is not high on the list of priorities right now.
New Theme Needed
I have been poking around and I have to admit that the default three-column Moveable Type blog theme is really appealing to me. I want to find a default framework that we can use on all of our blogs that will allow us to have plenty of places to place our links as well as news, ads and pictures. The setup on Weblogs Inc’s blogs is pretty much what I am looking for. I will whip one up for us to use that will work in WordPress and WordPress MU (if we decide to use it on any sites like that). If anyone knows of a WordPress theme that replicates the Weblogs Inc. setup I would love to hear about it.
Webmaster World PubCon in Vegas Tuesday
Webmaster World’s PubCon is set to begin Tuesday Nov 15th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining the event will be SEO big guns like Barry Schwarts (aka Rusty Brick), Jeremy Zawodny and Matt Cutts. Google, Yahoo and the rest of the search world will be putting on quite a show and fielding questions from webmasters from all over the world. It is kind of funny that it is in Vegas though. Computer types are notorious for being a bunch of tightwads. There will be a “super session” on BLogging on Tuesday which will be moderated by Barry Schwartz, Jeremy Zawodny and Andy Beal, and I will hopefully be there as well…just not on stage.
University of Texas
We have started off the Texas College Guide blog with a great post about the University of Texas at Austin. UT is an amazing campus right in the heart of one of America’s greatest cities. I had heard such great things about Austin over the years, but I had never been down there. I recently made it down for the ACL festival this year and I made it over to UT to check things out. A great, great campus and I think Austin is an awesome town to go to school in. Check it out.
3G Wireless Tech
Well, I put together a new site to keep track of one of my favorite topics today, wireless broadband. 3G Wireless Tech will follow all of the emerging news relating to the wireless data world. Technologies like EV-DO have revolutionized the way we look at mobile devices’ capabilities today. We went from little to no wireless internet access to blazing fast 400 to 700kbps average speeds bursting to over 2Mbps. Cingular is coming to market with their own 3G HSDPA technology for their GSM network. It is going to be really fun to be a geek in a few months.
Building a Blogging Network
So, what does it take to build a blogging network? What is a blogging network? Well, to me, a blogging network is a community. A community of people who either share the same interests, be it blogging or a particular subject like Cycling. There are lots of blogging networks out there, but perhaps the most well known is weblogsinc.com. That network has been getting lots of press lately and it could have something to do with the fact that the president seems to really like the attention. But, regardless of what you think of their front man, they have been very successful…and that will most likely continue to snowball for some time.
The point is, blogging, while it may seem a little “blown out” to many of us, is just getting started. Think about the millions of people that are out there that don’t even use the internet yet. Then tack on all of the AOLers and people who don’t use the internet for anything other than email. There is still a huge growth spirt that the blogging community will see in the near future. To me, blogging and multi-user blogging environments are a better community tool than say a forum. While forums allow for instant feedback, blogs provide a more stable environment for people to interact in. With a forum, if you do not log in for a few days, you can miss a lifetime of events. Blogging is more stable and static and lets people discuss more complex topics much more easily.
These are a couple of the reasons why I am so hot on building a blog network. I think that it is not only fun, but it can add a tremendous amount of value to people all over the world. That is really cool.
